Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of teenagers' digital identity duality through the use of main and second accounts on Instagram social media. Using a mixed-methods approach, this study reveals the motivations, impression management strategies, and psychological and social impacts of this practice. The results showed significant differences in self-expression, impression management, self-disclosure, and self-promotion between main and second accounts. Qualitative findings reveal adolescents' motivations for creating a Second account as an expressive space separate from the idealized self-image on the main account, as well as their efforts in negotiating digital identity to fit social norms and the need for self-authenticity. This study reveals the complexity of dynamics in adolescents' identity construction in the digital world, where they attempt to balance the projection of a public self-image with authentic self-expression through the use of multiple accounts. This research contributes to the understanding of how adolescents navigate social pressures and the need to be fully recognized in the context of social media.
